Jessica Kendrew

I grew up in the Hampshire countryside, its natural beauty influencing me a lot.  My childhood memories mainly consist of climbing trees, making dens, going for bike rides, fishing for sticklebacks, walking through fields full of cows, and generally being a true country bumpkin. Like many others, the lights and smoke of London intrigued me, life happened and I’m still there, though I am still a country girl at heart and will be on the coast in Suffolk when you can’t find me in the city. My rural roots have left their mark and I’m inspired by aritsts & Illustrators I’ve loved since then such as Edward Hopper, The Pre-Raphaelites, Jill Barklem, E.H.Shepard, Quentin Blake and Beatrix Potter seeping into my subconscious . . .

Creating art has always been my passion and where I feel most comfortable and capable. It was only natural for me to pursue it further as a career, so after all sorts of hilarious projects for Art GCSE’s, I went on to pursue a foundation course at Winchester School of Art gaining a distinction, followed by 3 years studying a BA hons fine art at Chelsea College of Art & Design.

After graduating, I suppose I had a little hiatus, mainly driven by the need for money & decided to concentrate on the business side of illustration and established a successful career working as an art agent in central London, liaising with many of the world’s leading advertising agencies and building up a rapport with a wealth of freelance illustrators & clients.  Those years have taught me a lot about the industry and have been essential to my development as an artist, finding my style and and knowing what clients are looking for on a project.

It is with great pleasure that I now paint for a living and live with my husband and daughter in SE London. You can get a feel for my habitat by looking at my paintings of East Dulwich and the surrounding area.

I mainly work in watercolour as I enjoy the freedom that it brings.  I enjoy exhibiting my work and I have original paintings, prints and greetings cards for sale in galleries and shops in London and Suffolk.
